YOU GIVE ME BUTTERFLIES // Oct. 12, 2019

It was the butterfly effect for Megan Skalla and Zachary Hunsaker.

After a double date two years ago — each with a different partner! — the two reconnected in 2019. Zach sent Meg a private message on Facebook, but Meg didn’t see it for months since she didn’t have the app on her phone. By chance (or butterflies), Meg re-downloaded the app, responded to the message, and found herself on a date with that mystery man from so long ago.

“I had the biggest butterflies, and I was smitten from the start,” Meg says. “It felt like the world fell our way.”

The cutest cosmic coincidence? Their first date activity was painting butterflies.

The two became instantly inseparable. They vowed to have an epic summer together before Zach went back to play basketball for Brown University. Then they vowed to be each other’s forever date — and forever love.

“Meg inspires me to be better every single day,” Zach says. “She is so kind, loving, smart, hilarious and the most positive person. I love her more than anything.”

Their butterfly-themed wedding, designed by Over the Top Events, was set for Oct. 12. After their sealing at the Salt Lake LDS Temple, they hosted a reception at Thanksgiving Point‘s Loggia Gardens.

“October 12 is the best day of our lives,” Meg says. “Zach is the answer to my prayers, and I’m so grateful for him.”

On a wing and a prayer.

FOREVER FAIRY TALE Meg and Zach knew they were soulmates from the start. “I’ve never had more in common or connected with someone so well,” Meg says. The couple now lives in Rhode Island, where Zach is finishing his last year at Brown University and is the captain of the basketball team. Meg is running her company, Lazy Day, and is a fitness instructor at a private gym. This new adventure away from their families has forged an even closer bond between them. “Meg and I can just laugh and talk for hours,” Zach says. “We never have a dull moment together.”

PICTURE THIS Meg Skalla’s wedding was sweetly chic and perfectly pink. That butterfly-stamped wax seal by Eccentricity on her invites is heaven sent. And every wardrobe wonder was dreamy drama — from her Christian Louboutin glitter pumps to the blush tint on her Alta Moda Bridal gown to her bridesmaids’ Rachel Parcell Collection dresses. (Fun Fact: Rachel is Meg’s older sister, and she was a UVB cover girl herself back in 2011!) Let’s talk about that rectangle rock on Meg’s left hand! For. The. LOVE. In addition to her engagement ring, J. Brooks Jewelers outfitted the bride with all kinds of arm candy — including the tear drop diamond earrings and beautiful bracelets by Norman Silverman.

SCENES + DREAMS Meg’s wedding vision sprung to life with hanging butterflies, perfect petals, stellar seating, and unforgettable cuisine. The dream team at Over the Top Events Alexandria and Heidi — worked closely with Meg to create a secret summer garden in the middle of fall. Flowers played a pivotal role in the design, with Over the Top Events creating a show-stopping arch and even an installation for the piano. (Music to our ears!) Vintage furniture from Evergreen & Ivy set the stage, and guests stayed warm wrapped in lush Minky Couture blankets next to cozy fires. Meg’s mom, Shannon Skalla, and her sisters, Rachel, Amy and Emily (pictured on the right), were there for Meg from the first date to the wedding date. “They helped me so much with inspiration and design. Plus, it’s been so fun to see how well Zach fits into our family. They have grilled Zach with questions — in true Skalla fashion! — and he has handled it all like a pro. I have honestly been so impressed. Most boys get scared off!” Meg laughs.

SENTIMENTAL SPARKS Meg and Zach’s Thanksgiving Point reception was bursting with fun, flavor and fireworks. The top-notch crew at Culinary Crafts created the most memorable meal: Cabernet braised short ribs, artisan breads, fresh fruit, carbonara pasta served out of a flaming cheese wheel, and flaming donuts topped with gelato. To drink? They had hot and cold covered — everything from Diet Coke to Hot Cocoa. The wedding was caked to perfection. Flour & Flourish created a five-tier butterfly beauty, and Meg surprised Zach with a basketball-themed groom’s cake by Sweet Bakes by Jodi. After the cakes were cut, the toasts were given, and the first dances were danced (to Kacey Musgraves’ “Butterflies,” of course), the two kissed and departed amidst fireworks in the sky and sparklers in loved ones’ hands.
